Diaries of Orren Perkins

The two Diaries of Orren Perkins are dated 1862 and 1863, but there were documents within the pockets of the diary that date to 1865. The diaries consist of daily entries by Universalist minister, Reverend Orren Perkins of Winchester, New Hampshire. Perkins was also a politician who, at the time of the diaries, served in the Lower House and Senate of the New Hampshire Legislature. Perkins wrote about his personal life, church activities, and local and political topics, including the American Civil War. He also has one spell of depression and a serious illness due to his "poisoned" ear. Documents from within the diary pockets include war widow benefit receipts from 1862, a newspaper clipping about a Senate Convention involving Perkins in 1865, and miscellaneous notes. Perkins kept a detailed record of his purchases in the back of each diary.

Dr. William S. Pierce papers

The bulk of the papers are scans of Civil War Service (muster, disability, etc.) and Pension Records of Jarvis and Noah Jenkins (brothers), James Thomas Smullen. All were part of the 1st Eastern Shore of Maryland Infantry during the Civil War. The records span from 1861-1902, with significant material related to the widow's pension case of Henrietta Smullen, wife of James Smullen.

Elijah T.P. Gibbons papers

Elijah T.P. Gibbons papers document through correspondence the activities of Gibbons’ cousin, Alexander King, a Union soldier who served in Tennessee’s Company K and Hiram Scott, Gibbons’ uncle who was living in Kentucky during the Civil War. The correspondence also includes friends and family members and expresses opinion on the war including the draft, life in military camp, and their on-going activities, 1861-1865. Also included are debt payments and bond statements between Gibbons and James Cottman from the 1870s.
