Henrietta Byrd papers

The Henrietta Byrd papers are deeds, wills, lease, transactions, and correspondence of a 19th Century businesswomen in Salisbury, Maryland, 1842-1891. Following the death of her husband, Henrietta sought legal counsel from Congressmen and Attorney, John Rankin Franklin, to understand her rights as a widowed entrepreneur in the Antebellum Era. She later owned at least two properties, including the “Wicomico House,” which was four-story restaurant and hotel on Main Street, Salisbury.

The Laura C. Redden collection contains an autobiography for Laura C. Redden (1839-1923). The autobiography was written by her under the pseudonym of Howard Glyndon and was edited by Judy Jaeger Jones. The original was published circa 1870, but a 1995 edition added an introduction and underwent a process of revision. Redden was born in Somerset County, Maryland. The map entitled "The Power of Place", details Redden's journeys around the United States. The map was created in 1995 as part of the Minnesota Women's History Month proceedings.

The papers of Louise Hopkins Dryden document her experience as the first Somerset County woman to christen a Liberty Ship, the S.S. WILLIAM WELCH, March, 1943. Records include correspondence, photographs, and a booklet that documents the entirety of the Bethlehem Liberty Fleet. Also included are family photographs of Mrs. Dryden from her infancy in 1906 until a year before her death in 2002.

The Lynn Perry papers document his military service as an officer in the American Expeditionary Forces and a Lieutenant Corporal in World War II, as well as his personal interests in genealogy, the Mason-Dixon Boundary Line, and the Civil War with materials dating from 1880-1960, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1910-1945. Materials within the collection include his diary and a series of photographs from World War I, a World War II scrapbook documenting his work during a top secret mission in Alaska. In addition to the military service of Lynn Perry, his papers also include a scrapbook documenting Margaret Perry’s political career as President of the Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women.
Miss Halsey's French Wounded Emergency Fund Volunteer Diary

The author of this diary, Miss Halsey, was an American woman who spent time in Biarritz and Paris, France, during the First World War in 1917. She wrote about her social activities, America’s growing involvement in the war, and the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. On April 5, she took a position with the French Wounded Emergency Fund, a British relief organization. Her job was to chauffeur one of its leaders, Edith May, and deliver supplies to non-Red Cross hospitals in the Mayenne, Ernée, Loire, Sarthe, and Orne departments.

The material contains teaching notes from courses at Salisbury University including literature, mythology, as well as LGBTQ and Feminism studies, research materials on lynchings, folklore, folklife, cultural exploration, and her records of participation in a variety of societies such as the Maryland Folklore Festival.
