Polly Batchelder’s collection is a comprehensive documentation of genealogical research on Old Somerset County, Maryland via land and parish records, as well as a series of obituaries from the Marylander and Herald newspaper and city of Salisbury tax assessment ledgers. Included in the collection are the papers of Alberta Smith; mementos found by Polly and her son Geoffrey at the abandoned Smith house on West Sharpless road in Oriole, Somerset County, Maryland. Materials include photograph and autograph albums and correspondence. The materials date from 1889-2001 with the bulk of the material dates from 1982-2001.

Purnell Family Tree

Hand-drawn Purnell family tree composed by Emma Purnell, 1888 and includes a family crest with the word "Virtue" written beneath. Written in the lower right corner of the tree, "A tree of the Purnell family made by Emma J. Purnell, eight in descent from the first Thomas in 1888. "=" This character is used for the word married, "+" is to indicate left no descendant. According to tradition in the Robins family, the wife of the first Thomas Purnell was Esther Looman but my grandfather thought differently and suggested it was Elizabeth who was born in 1670(?) also that the first Purnell came over here in 1635 when he was not quite grown. *Mayor William Purnell, son of Elisha was Mayor of ______ in Worcester, Md. during the Revolutionary War.
