Abstract

The May Day Collection documents the May Day festivities held at Salisbury State Teachers college from 1933 to 1963. Materials include May Day programs, newspaper clippings, press releases, invitations, and correspondence.

Administrative History

May Day was an annual event at Maryland State Normal School, now Salisbury University, that began in May 1930. During the May Day Celebration, a female student was crowned queen and events such as a may pole dance, theatrical skits, choral pieces, dance displays, and other entertainment were performed.  The coronation of the queen was often followed by a formal dinner and a dance in the gym. The first May Day Queen was Miss Flora Hankins, who was chosen because she was Miss S.N.S. and voted Most Literary.

The May Day Collection documents the May Day festivities held at Salisbury State Teachers college from 1933 to 1963.  Materials include May Day programs, newspaper clippings, press releases, invitations, and correspondence.
