Abstract

The J. Paul Crooks' WWII Photograph Collection is a set of photographs that Crooks took while stationed in Okinawa, Japan and at Lowry Field, Colorado in 1946.

Biographical History

James Paul Crooks was born on July 16, 1914 to James Crooks and Anna Over Crooks in Pennsylvania. He married Alberta Vockroth, a teacher, on August 8, 1933.  Together they had two children.  Crooks enlisted as a Corporal in the Army on May 11, 1945.  Because of his age, he was assigned to the 10th Photo Tech Unit as a photographer and served in the Pacific Theatre. He was discharged on August 18, 1946.  Crooks lived in Clarion, Pennsylvania and operated the Crooks Shoe Store with his wife.  Corporal Crooks died on August 29, 1986 and was buried in Clarion.

Scope and Content Note

The J. Paul Crooks' WWII Photograph Collection is a set of photographs that Crooks took while stationed in Okinawa, Japan and at Lowry Field, Colorado in 1946.  Some of the photographs include images such as soldiers on the beach, Japanese bunkers, destroyed landscapes, Japanese locals, children performing group calisthenics, farming, the village and waterway, the military encampment, a military parade at an airfield, religious idols, Lowry Field, a map of Okinawa, and the insignia for the Eigth Air Force "Homsteader."
