Abstract

The travel diary of Anna Phillips documents a woman from Boston, Massachusetts' trip abroad to Europe between May and October 1850. Phillips departed from Boston Harbor on May 15 aboard the steamship Canada and summarizes the cross-Atlantic journey on one page. However, the rest of her trip is presented in detail with several page entries. Tucked within the cover's pocket is a piece of paper with a note.

Scope and Content Note

Anna  Phillips  left  Boston,  Massachusetts,  for  Liverpool,  England,  aboard  the  steamship  Canada  with  123  seasick  passengers  on  May  15,  1850.  Phillips  spent  subsequent  months  sightseeing  during  the  day  and  attending  social  gatherings  or  performances  late  into  the  night.  She  traveled  to  London,  crossed  the  English  Channel  to  catch  a  train  to  Paris,  took  a  boat  down  the  Rhône  River  to  Marseille,  and  visited  places  throughout  Italy,  Switzerland,  Germany,  and  Belgium.  The  last  part  of  Phillips’  1850  journey  brought  her  from  Paris  to  London  to  Edinburgh,  Scotland,  before  ending  the  diary  in  October,  stating  “See  another  book....”
