Abstract

The Diary of Mark Buttrick ranges from January 1 to July 4, 1884 and documents the daily activities of 13 year old Buttrick, who lived in the rural town of Deering, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Buttrick also included a register of employers and payment in the back of the diary.

Biographical History

Mark Woodbury Buttrick was born on May 27, 1870 in Deering, New Hampshire. He was the son of Danbridge Buttrick (1838 – 1907) and Martha Bumford Buttrick (1833 – 1907). Mark had two siblings, Willis Dunlap Buttrick (1862 – 1946) and Charlotte Buttrick Hoyt (1868 – 1913).

Mark worked in a wool mill as a carder.

On December 29, 1892, Mark married Lilly Haigh Buttrick (1870 – 1961) in Lowell, Massachusetts. The couple had three children together; Harold Frederick Buttrick (1897 – 1968), Norman Buttrick (1903 -1916) and Eileen Buttrick (1909 – 1918).

Mark Buttrick died January 4, 1943 in Hillsboro, New Hampshire at the age of 72.
