Abstract

The Voyd and Cartha Donoway papers consist of documents related to the death of Sergeant Voyd J. Donoway of Pittsville, Maryland and the post-death, grieving process of his widow, Cartha Donoway. Donoway was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge on December 25, 1944.

Biographical History

Voyd J. Donoway was born in 1918 and enlisted in the Army on May 19, 1943 and was in the 30th Division, 120th Infantry, Company B. Sergeant Donoway was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge on December 25, 1944 for which he received the purple heart. His wife, Cartha Townsend (later Jenkins) was born in 1918 and died in 2008. They are buried in the Saint Johns United Methodist Church Cemetery in Fruitland, Maryland.

Scope and Content Note

The Voyd and Cartha Donoway papers consist of documents related to the death of Sergeant Voyd J. Donoway of Pittsville, Maryland and the post-death, grieving process of his widow, Cartha Donoway. Donoway was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge on December 25, 1944. Items related to Voyd's life include a framed, colorized photograph of Donoway, three letters from Voyd to the Middleton family in 1944, and a history of the 120th infantry regiment. Items related to Voyd's death include the telegram and letters informing his wife, Cartha, of his death; purple heart and memorial certificates; printed and handwritten obituaries; sympathy flower tags from the funeral; funeral home and return of remains expense receipts; a War Department publications entitled "Disposition of World War II Armed Forces Dead" and "Escorting American War Dead"; a Veterans of Foreign Wars publication entitled "How Sleep the Brave"; photographs of Cartha at the gravesite; and, insurance and family allowances applications. Artifacts include purple heart and bronze star medals and the wool flag from Voyd's funeral.
