Abstract

The United States Post Office (Quantico, Md.) records includes account books, money order registrations, and route directories ranging from 1889-1950 with the bulk of the material dating from 1943-1950. These materials document neighborhood mail routes of post carriers and file registrations of the Quantico and Wetipquin communities. Also included is correspondence of the discontinuation of the Clara and Wetipquin office. Further, the collection includes a newsletter series called “The Postal Bulletin”. These bulletins are nationally issued instructions to postmasters to maintain corporate uniformity on matters such as retirement, international mailing, and war bond distribution.

Administrative History

The Quantico, Maryland branch of the United States Post Office has been in existence since 1826.  In October, 1867, Maryland legislation redistricted the Eastern Shore counties and the Quantico Post Office became part of the newly formed Wicomico County.  The Quantico post office location is still in existence today, but throughout that time there have been two other Wicomico County postal offices that have existed and then discontinued.  In Wetipquin, Maryland, the post office was created on May 2, 1894, and was discontinued March 30, 1935.  Similarly, the Clara, Maryland post office was created in February 6, 1901, and discontinued May 15, 1943. 

In the early twentieth century, Congress passed statewide legislation for Rural Free Delivery (RFD). This forced the post office industry to adjust their routes to reach the homes of rural families.  It is possible that the discontinuation of post offices at Clara and Wetipquin was a result of a merger of the Wicomico postal locations.
