The Carel Langeler collection includes a considerable number of publications from late-19th to early-20th-century American society. Of particular interest are several popular literary journals, monthly magazines for women and children, and influential national publications such as Harper’s Weekly and Pucks. These publications document contemporary social and political thought in the United States from a variety of perspectives. The majority of the materials were acquired by Carel Langeler from thrift and antique stores throughout the eastern United States during the mid-20th century. The collection also includes personal material relating to Carel Langeler and his immediate family.
Carel Langeler was born in Hillegon, the Netherlands in 1907. He and his twin brother Willem left school at age 16, and moved to France for a year to learn about the flower trade, a major industry in the region. In his mid-20s, he broke off an engagement to immigrate to the United States at his older brother Hendrik’s invitation, bringing only a tuxedo and a few basic possessions. Carel and his brothers worked for M. Van Waveren and Sons, a wholesale grower, and exporter of flower bulbs from Holland. He lived in Salisbury, Maryland, but spent many years traveling across the east coast to solicit customers, and negotiate sales for the company.
Although forced out of formal schooling at a young age, Carel remained a very intelligent and inquisitive man. He was a voracious reader and he enjoyed collecting a variety of objects, such as stamps and china plates. During his travels for work, Carel often visited thrift and antique stores to purchase old periodicals or other items of historical interest. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1948, but kept up with international news, and frequently travelled back to the Netherlands to visit family. He met and married Margaret Airey Brannock, and they had 2 children together. After Margaret’s death in 1981, he married a second time. Carel Langeler died in 1993, aged 85, and was buried at Parsons Cemetery in Salisbury, Maryland.
This collection includes periodicals on a variety of topics spanning from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. The bulk of materials include popular literary magazines from the 19th century, early 20th century children’s educational and entertainment materials, and major news periodicals. Most publications are in English written for an American audience, although there are a few British or French magazines, and one newspaper distributed for German-speaking populations within the United States. The collection also features a small amount of Carel Langeler’s personal and family history material from the mid-20th century.
Series I: Art and Literature Publications, contains periodicals relating to art and literature, most from the late 1800s. The majority of materials are monthly literary journals such as Scribner’s Monthly, Century Magazine, and Lippincott’s. These publications were extremely popular among well-educated families, and featured the stories of many notable authors, such as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. This series also contains some literary publications intended for children and youth.
Series II: Family Life and Homemaking Publications, contains periodicals for women and families, which featured articles on homemaking, parenting, and agriculture. It also features several farmer’s almanacs from the 1920s-30s, which were commonly consulted by American farmers for their predictions of weather patterns and agricultural tips.
Series III: General Interest Publications, contains several major newspapers from the late 19th century, such as Harper’s Weekly and Puck. These publications addressed contemporary social and political issues, both in the United States and internationally, and featured satirical cartoons by notable artists such as Charles Nast and Bernhard Gillam. This series also includes popular culture and entertainment publications, and some general non-periodical published materials.
Series IV: Family History, contains the personal papers and photographs of Carel Langeler and his family. This including letters, newspaper clippings, and materials used by Carel Langeler in the course of his employment with M. Van Waveren and Sons.
The Carel Langeler collection has been arranged into four series based on the primary subject matter of the contents: ART AND LITERATURE PUBLICATIONS, FAMILY LIFE AND HOMEMAKING PUBLICATIONS, and GENERAL INTEREST PUBLICATIONS contain collected periodicals and other published materials purchased from a variety of sources during the mid-20th century. FAMILY HISTORY includes the personal papers and photographs of Carel Langeler and his family. Series IV was maintained primarily in the order from which it was received from the donor. The remainder of the materials r(represent an artificial collection with no original order.
Periodicals are roughly organized by date and topical subseries within each series. Multiple folders of the same periodical were kept together, unless both the name of a publication was altered and distinct issues within the collection were separated by a significant amount of time, particularly Scribner’s Monthly and The Century Magazine. A considerable portion of the homemaking magazines and general interest materials are located in oversized boxes, which are arranged sequentially by date.
Folders are listed by their location in each box; any given subject may be dispersed throughout the entirety of the collection.
