Abstract

The Jackson Family photograph collection visually documents the prominent Salisbury, Maryland family including United States Senator William P. Jackson and Maryland Republican State Central Committee member, William Newton Jackson. Florence Rue, wife of William Newton Jackson, and daughter of Philadelphia National Bank President, Levi Lingo Rue and family is also visually documented in this series of photographic images. Visually, the images document the wealth and status of the two families, from 1865-1968 with the bulk of the images dating from 1880-1920.

Biographical History

William H. Jackson (1839-1915), born near Salisbury, Maryland he served in the House of Representatives as a congressman from the first district; his brother, Elihu Emory Jackson (1837-1907), served as Governor of Maryland. William H. Jackson’s son, William Purnell Jackson (1868-1939), was born in Salisbury, Maryland,  grew up to follow in his father’s footsteps becoming a member of the Republican National Committee and in 1908 he was appointed to the United States Senate. William Newton Jackson (1893-1978), son of William P., also born in Salisbury, became the director of the Salisbury National Bank and Peninsula General Hospital; he was married to Florence Rue (1895-1988) the daughter of Philadelphia National Bank President, Levi Lingo Rue (1860-1931) and Mary McCurdy Gill Rue (1867-1929). The Jackson families owned two prominent properties on Camden Avenue in Salisbury, Maryland, known as The Homestead and The Towers.
