Abstract

This collection contains 5 series of materials that relate to either the Washington Hotel or the town of Princess Anne. The first series comprises of Ledgers, which include 39 hotel registers, 15 cash account books and 9 other ledgers. Series II contains music related items, including sheet music that ranges in date from the 1880s to the 1920s and includes artists such as Irving Berlin, John Phillip Sousa and Stephen Foster. Also included in this series are issues of The Etude a musical magazine, ranging from 1901 to 1927. Finally in this series there are songbooks that range in date from 1888 to 1921. Series III contains manuscripts that relate to the Washington Hotel and John D. Wallop as proprietor of it. This series ranges in date from 1900 to 1920, and includes receipts, correspondence, and solicitations to the hotel, menus, and financial records. Series IV contains manuscripts relating to the town of Princess Anne and John D. Wallop serving as mayor of the town. This series ranges in date from 1909 to 1914 and contains correspondence, receipts, and public works related correspondence and receipts. Series V contains artifacts and is comprised of one Vee Dee Sherry bottle and a child’s vest.

Biographical History

John Douglass Wallop was born in April 1864 to William (born 1819) and Sarah (born 1842) Wallop in Accomack County, Virginia. In 1900 John Wallop was in Salisbury with his wife Berta (born June 1872) and children, John Douglass Wallop Jr. (born 1899) and Alice Wallop (born 1896). In 1908 he purchased the Washington Hotel in Princess Anne, and in 1910 was elected to the Board of the Town Commissioners of Princess Anne. In 1911 he bought the Colonial Hotel in Ocean City at 1st and 2nd Streets, and held on to that property at least until 1913. In 1913 he purchased the Seaside Hotel, also in Ocean City. In 1935 the property of the Washington Hotel transferred to his son, who sold it to Leonard and Daisy Shrives. They ran it for a few years until it transferred to Robert and Mary Murphey in 1956. John Wallop Jr.’s son was famous for writing the novel The Year the Yankees Won the Pennant that was turned into a Broadway show and movie, Damn Yankees. Berta Wallop died in 1959, and Alice Wallop became Mrs. Franklin T. Waller.
