Abstract

This collection contains a CD-Rom of scans of Barren Creek Cemetery Book from 1868 to 1917. The original book is at the Adkins Historical Museum Complex in Mardela Springs, MD. The book contains the deceased's birth and death dates and place of birth and in most cases, cause of death as well as which plot that are buried.

Administrative History

Barren Creek Cemetery was built in 1842 and is now maintained as a historic site by Westside Historical Society. In 1834, Joshua Brattan, prominent farmer and landowner of Barren Creek Springs, gave an acre of land for, "the love of literature and religion," to a board of ten Presbyterian trustees to establish a school, cemetery, and church "on the county road between Barren Creek Mills and the Springs." In 1842 the congregation built a church building which also housed the town's only school.
