Abstract

This collection contains photos, documents, newspaper articles, and publications related to African American history on Delmarva, particularly in Salisbury and Wicomico County. It includes genealogical research, research related to Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad, and documents related to Charles H. Chipman.

Biographical History

Linda Duyer was a local historian with a particular focus on African American history on Delmarva. She held various positions with the Chipman Cultural Center, Nabb Research Center, Julia Purnell Museum, City of Salisbury, Somerset County Lynching Memorial Task Force, and more. She passed away in November 2020.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains photos, documents, newspaper articles, and publications related to African American history on Delmarva, particularly in Salisbury and Wicomico County. The first series consists of research related to the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman, and African American geneology. The second series--which is the bulk of the collection--are materials related to the life and career of Doctor Charles H. Chipman, a Wicomico County educator who started the Chipman Foundation and Chipman Cultural Center that preserves Delmarvan African American history. The third series are other historical materials, including articles from Daily Times writer Brice Stump, items from Houston Cemetery and other cemeteries, church histories, street plans, as well as photos and documents related to African American schools, including Salisbury High School.
