The Architectural Drawings of Clifton Plantation, drawn for Walter S. Carpenter, Jr., President of the DuPont Company, who had recently purchased the home located on the banks of the Manokin River. Renderings of the circa 1783 home were drawn by John F. Mullins, a registered architect from Wilmington, Delaware.

The Clifton Plantation, a Flemish bond brick two-story house, is located in Westover, about 8 miles from Princess Anne and 13 miles from Crisfield, on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland in Somerset County.  Built prior to 1819, the property was owned by Edward H.C. Wilson in 1823, then to his brother, John C. Wilson, Jr. In the 1840s, Isaac S. Atkinson owned it and in 1871, Philadelphian Morris R. Stroud, Jr. purchased the property. After 1884, it changed hands five times until 1938, when the Carpenters bought it. Situated on 112 acres with almost half a mile of waterfront shoreline on the Manokin River, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Carpenter of Wilmington, Delaware owned the estate from 1938 until 1979. He was the first non-DuPont family member that became President of the DuPont Company.  Mrs. Carpenter believed she was a descendant of Randal Revell. Kathryn Washburn Niskanen purchased Clifton in 1979 from the Carpenter's granddaughter.
