Abstract

The Richard Culver Papers is a collection of newspapers and research from Richard Culver’s time as an editor for the Daily Times in Somerset County. While editor, Culver wrote about numerous things happening in Somerset County at the time, from crime and government controversies to celebrations and other recreational events. There is research for the tercentennial of Somerset County that happened in 1966, as well as for the Somerset County Jail.

Biographical History

Richard Culver was an editor for the Daily Times in Somerset County during the 1970’s. Culver was a graduate of Salisbury University and Wayne State Univeristy, Detroit. He began working for Salisbury University in 1988 and worked in the public relations office and as media relations director until 2019. Culver was also a an advocate of the arts, serving on the boards of the Salisbury-Wicomico Arts Council, the Salisbury Film Society, and the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra.

Scope and Content Note

The Richard Culver Papers includes newspapers primarily from the 1970s written or collected by Richard Culver, editor for the Daily Times in Somerset County. Culver wrote about many different topics, most of them related to policy decisions being actively debated by the local government like raising teachers’ salaries or building a new landfill. He also reported on crimes and scandals around some of the government officials. There are newspapers from the tercentennial of Somerset County in 1966, and the history of some important buildings and people from Somerset County. Photographs and negatives that were used in the newspapers are included as well.
