Abstract

This collection contains records from the Bounds family from 1807 to the late 1930s. Series 1 through 4 contains postcards, newspapers, and other documents from different members of the Bounds family from the early 1800s into the twentieth century. The rest of the collection consists of documents of George Bounds, a businessman in the Hebron and Wicomico County area. These materials include real estate transactions, business correspondence, and other related records.

Biographical History

George C. Bounds was a Hebron, Maryland area businessman born in 1876, and was a partner of G.A. Bounds & Co. lumber firm founded by his father, George A. Bounds. He founded the Hebron Savings Bank in 1910 to serve the local agricultural community. He took part in both Hebron and Salisbury area affairs, and owned a cannery. Bounds died in 1951. 

Scope and Content Note

Series 1 contains photocopies of postcards depicting scenes from Salisbury and Wicomico County dating from the early twentieth century. Series 2 contains newspapers, books, almanacs, and examples of advertising from the 1900s to the late 1930s. Of particular note are the examples of ads for medicines from this period. Series 3 is one document, a photocopy of a land survey from the early nineteenth century, and series 4 consists of a copy of an autograph book from the 1880s. Series 5 and 6 are the more significant portion of the collection, with the records of George C. Bounds and some from his father George A. Bounds from Hebron, Maryland. These series have legal records of his real estate transactions as well as documents from his various businesses, including Hebron Savings Bank, a cannery, and a lumber company. The legal papers are the bulk of this part of the collection. 

Box 4 contains deeds from colonial Maryland and scrapbooks containing news from the Salisbury area as well as national events from 1941 to 1965. Three scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings with news from the Salisbury area. The Green scrapbook contains obituaries and articles regarding sudden deaths in the community as well as deaths of political figures of the 1950s and 1960s. A brown scrapbook contains clippings of engagement and wedding announcements; other news includes community events, kids' sports photos, and World War Two servicemember acknowledgements. A white scrapbook features wedding and engagement bulletins as well as celebrity weddings and births, notably from the Kennedys. There are also clippings from Lyndon B. Johnson’s Inauguration and the civil rights March on Washington. Somerset county deeds from 1761 to 1837 detail the land plots and legal procedures necessary to transfer ownership of land during the colonial and post-colonial periods. Family names mentioned in the deeds are Turpin, Bennett, Chittam, Anderson, Reddish, Goslee and Carlyle/Carlisle. Also included is an 1817-1837 receipt of rental expenses.Transcriptions of each deed is included in the collection.
