Abstract

This unique collection of over 100 photos, newspaper clippings and objects portrays the day to day to life at the Salisbury Marine Construction Company on the water including working conditions and technology, examples of fine craftsmanship and the beautiful finished products and the progressive managerial stance toward its employees and the growth of the company. In addition to the construction company records, there is a series of materials acquired by donor Peg Lauridsen that includes a copy of the Eastern Shore Saturday Evening Post, an article about Houston Cemetery in Salisbury, Parker Family genealogy and a guide to the 250th Anniversary of Worcester County.

Administrative History

The Salisbury Marine Construction Company acquired the Salisbury Marine Railway Company making it the largest shipbuilding plant in the United States south of New York.  The facility was state of the art, employing 100 skilled tradesmen and working with the leading Naval architects and noted yachtsmen along the East Coast.  Together they specialized in repair work, customization and building high-end yachts and commercial vessels taking orders from as far as Europe. Many of the vessels created by the company would go on to be commissioned by the Navy in World War I.

The items were once the property of the Mr. Louis J Costa, General Manger for the Salisbury Marine Construction Company.
