The Miles Family survey collection documents numerous Eastern Shore land boundaries. Until the mid-twentieth century, the state of Maryland did not emphasis accuracy of land surveys or the collection of deeds. The work of the Miles family allowed the State of Maryland to utilize original Eastern Shore deeds to legally designate boundary and partition lines. In numerous cases, the Miles’ family records were the only form of land documentation on the Eastern Shore. Consequently, the State of Maryland legally recognized the Miles Family Survey Collection in the court of law and have been used to settle land disputes such as the D379 Assateague Island Land suit. The collection has been the basis for issuing boundary lines, prep construction areas, mapmaking, and engineering. Many of the plats, surveys, and deeds are predominately from Somerset, Worcester, and Wicomico counties, but the collection also extends to the Upper Shore of Maryland, Delaware in Kent and Sussex, and Accomack County, Virginia. The collection is narrowed into election districts. The materials date from 1842-1978 with the bulk of the material dates from 1929-1977.
The Miles Family survey collection is the product of four generations of vocational success and dedication to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. William Franklin Washington Miles was born in Somerset County, Maryland circa 1821, married Sallie E. S. Miles, and lived into the 1880s. He was a farmer who collected gathering and preserved local deeds. William F.W. Miles’ son, Samuel Francis Miles, was born in 1865, was married to Laura Virginia Waples and died in October of 1945. In the late nineteenth century, Samuel moved to Chicago, Illinois and tried various occupations such as a grain operator superintendent and oyster merchant. He later returned to the Maryland Eastern Shore for the birth of his child William Ballard Miles Sr. and became a vocational land surveyor until his death in October of 1945. Samuel’s son, William Ballard Miles Sr., was born in April 1896, married Marion Miles, and continued his father’s work by utilizing the collected deeds to construct land surveys and partition boundaries. He was a surviving United States Navy veteran of World War I and continued his grandfather’s and father’s work until his death in April of 1983. William Ballard Miles Jr., (1925-2011) was born in Chicago and obtained his civil engineering degree at John Hopkins. He also served in the United States Navy, stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He was married to Maxine Dryden Miles.
The survey collection of reports and maps have maintained Miles’ family original order of creation. William B. Miles Jr. assisted the Edward H. Nabb Research Center in identifying, repairing, and filing his family’s collection to make these records accessible to the public. File numbers 1-6, 8-15, 24-27, and 30, 31, 34-51 contain documents of surveys performed by William F.W. Miles and Samuel F. Miles. Each file contains an index of the contents as the beginning. File numbers D-1 through D-590 contain surveys and deeds created and collected by William F.W. Miles, Samuel F. Miles and William Ballard Miles Sr. These numbers are the surveyor’s internal catalog system to document job numbers, surveys, and deeds. The oversize drawers are a combination of expanded surveys and aerial photographs constructed by Samuel F. Miles and William Ballard Sr.
