Abstract

This collection contains church records from multiple Methodist churches on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, as well as marriage licenses and membership transfer letters. These records are dated from 1884 to 1967. Also included is a copy of The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church from 1976.

Administrative History

The ideas behind the Methodist Protestant Church can be traced back to 1824, as a branch of the Methodist Church, and quickly spread throughout several states, including Maryland. The Methodist Protestant followers disagreed with the government created by the main Methodist Church, as laymen could not hold council positions within the church, nor could they vote on church matters. They were expelled from the Methodist Church because of their differing beliefs, and in 1830, they created the Methodist Protestant Church. Many of the General Conventions and conferences between Methodist Protestant and other Christian leaders took place in Baltimore, MD.  In 1939, this church was united with the Methodist Church and its numerous branches to create the United Methodist Church.  Methodism was one of the most practiced religions in Maryland throughout the late 1700s to the early 1900s.  

Scope and Content Note

This collection includes a record of ministers and board members, including the reason they may have left the church or their position. There are multiple records of the members of the churches within the Nanticoke Circuit, which include the dates of joining and leaving the church and the reasons why they may have left. There are also various marriage licenses and records, as well as baptism, probation, and funeral records. Membership transfers are also included throughout the collection. All of the records included are dated from 1884 to 1967. The Methodist Churches included are Jones, Trinity, Nanticoke, Whitehaven, Tyaskin, Parsonage, and Bivalve (Waltersville). Included is a version of The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church from 1976.
