Abstract

This diary was written between the years of 1929 and 1933 by Mrs. Irene Lentz Campbell. Detailed inside are descriptions of the Campbells' daily life in Pennsylvania, family visits, occasional travels, notes on work and brief mentions of personal finance.

Biographical History

Irene Campbell was born March 18th, 1902 to parents James Edwin Lentz and Florence Beulah Enders Lentz in Elizabethville, Pennsylvania. She had one sister, Dorothy Ethel Lentz Erb.

She attended Perdue University where she was active in several woman’s organizations including Pi Beta Phi, the Young Women’s Christian Association, Perdue Girls’ Club and the Eurodelphian Literary Society. She was also active in the home economics honorary society, Omicron Nu, and the honor society for education students, Kappa Delta Pi.

Irene met her future husband, Richard W. Campbell (1900 -1976), at Perdue in 1921. The two were married in 1927 and returned to live in Pennsylvania.

Irene worked occasionally at the Highland Hall Girls’ School where she taught Home Economics and Costume Design.

Irene died in Sun City, Arizona in March 1988. She was buried in Eastlawn Cemetery in Tyrone, Pennsylvania.

Scope and Content Note

The diary was written between the years of 1929 and 1933 by Mrs. Irene Lentz Campbell. Detailed inside are descriptions of the Campbells' daily life in Pennsylvania, family visits, occasional travels, notes on work and brief mentions of personal finance. Although the bulk of the diary was written and takes place in the years between 1929 and 1933, Mrs. Campbell includes biographical information dating back to the Fall of 1921 when she met her husband, Richard W. Campbell at Perdue University. Mrs. Campbell mentions her work as a teacher at Highland Hall Girl's School in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania and her volunteer work with the local church.
