Abstract

The Records of the College Developmental Studies Program contains documents regarding the Developmental Studies Program at Salisbury State College from 1975 to 1985. The collection contains internal documents, personal communications, data processing records, budget records, admissions and application records, and policy statements among other relevant information. 

Administrative History

Salisbury University was founded as Maryland State Normal School in 1925 as a teacher's college to help with the shortage of teachers in rural areas of the Eastern Shore. Maryland State Normal School, later Maryland State Teachers College, offered courses for training primary and secondary school teachers. As the school expanded and eventually became a public liberal arts college in 1963, renamed Salisbury State College, education transformed from the only subject taught to a department at the college.

Salisbury State College's Developmental Studies Program was establsihed to aid students with learning disabilities in their attendance at Salisbury State College. The program was established by the Board of Trustees of the State Universities and Colleges and required incoming freshmen and transfer students with less than 25 credit hours to be given placement tests in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Students who scored below predetermined levels on these tests were required to register for developmental courses. This program was in operation during the 1970s and 80s.
