Abstract

The Caulk Family Papers have documents from circa 1910 to 1996. The majority of the documents within the collection are photographs, but it also includes correspondence and certificates. This collection shows the Caulk family's lives through images.

Biographical History

The collection surrounds the Caulk family who lived in Sharptown, Maryland. Different documents give information about the various family members. Ana Caulk was born on October 1, 1855, and died in 1940. She married John Caulk, a merchant and a mason who was born in 1844 and died in 1928. Lillian Caulk, a member of the family was born on December 29, 1880, in Sharptown, Maryland. She died on September 14, 1929, at the age of 48. Her father was Levin Bennett, and her mother was Fronia Bennett. The Bennett family and their home are included in the collection. Franklin Caulk received his diploma from Sharptown High School, the Academic Course in Wicomico County in 1924.  Olive Caulk received her diploma from the Maryland State Normal School in Wicomico County in 1923.  Olive Caulk was a member of Tau Phi Sorority in 1932 and married Franklin Griffin. She gave birth to Patricia Griffin in Sharptown, Maryland in 1952. The family has been involved with theater, including vaudeville. The collection contains photographs that depicts their performances. 

Scope and Content Note

The Caulk Family Papers includes a variety of photographs. The photographs vary from professional portraits, candid/unprofessional images, and pictures of performances. The earliest photographs were taken around circa 1910, with the latest in 1962. The majority of photographs were taken in the 1930s.The written documents include letters, post cards, diplomas, sheet music, a sorority certificate, and a church program. Common names that are noted within the documents are Franklin Caulk, Lillian Caulk, Olive Caulk, and Mabel Caulk. There is an additional scrapbook within the collection made by a separate family called the Barbours within the 1920s.
