The Waller Family Collection is a genealogical collection relating to the Waller family from 1606-2008 with the bulk of the collection ranging from 1982-1998. The majority of the collection contains genealogical information of the direct line of the Waller family as well as the various extended family lines. The collection also includes topical publications on Somerset County and the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland as well as online and genealogical research manuals. The collection documents the family with images, newspaper clippings, tax documents, church and census documents, and letters.
Carolyn Waller Ballou (1938-2009) Born in Salisbury to William Edgar Waller and Marguerite Short Waller. Carolyn graduated from Somerville High School in 1956, and graduated from the School of Nursing of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1959. She married Lt. J.G. Joseph Frank Ballou of Rochester New Hampshire in Somerville in 1959. Following her husband on his tours of duty Carolyn lived in Norfolk, Monterey California, Riverside Rhode Island, Virginia Beach, Concord California, and Springfield Virginia. She passed the Pennsylvania State Boards in 1960 to Earn her Registered Nurses License and after raising her children Catherine Elizabeth Ballou, Joseph Frank Ballou Jr., and Karen Louise Ballou returned to nursing in 1976 after a refresher course at the University of Virginia and worked at Northern Virginia doctors Commonwealth Hospital in Arlington Virginia until 1978 whereupon she moved to Marshall Virginia and transferred to Fauquier County Hospital in Warrenton where she spent the next 10 years before retiring. she was an active Methodist and participated heavily in the Marshall United Methodist Church and the Asbury United Methodist Church. she was also a member of the Piedmont Republican Womens Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution from 1986, and the Lower Delmarva Genealogical Society from 1992, and The Edward H. Nabb Center Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture from 1994.
Joseph Frank Ballou (1935-2021) was born in Rochester New Hampshire to Laurence and Dorothy Ballou. Joe Attended the United States Naval Academy and graduated in 1957 and married Carolyn Frances Waller in 1959. During his career in the navy Joe attained the rank of commander, serving in the Vietnam War aboard the USS Torsk, The USS Bacuna, and the USs Mount Katmai. in his career while on land Joe worked at the Defense Nuclear Agency as well as Military Sealift Command. Joe also attained a master’s degree in physics from Brown University as well as a Masters in Transport Engineering from George Washington University. upon his retirement in 1979 Joe continued his work for the government as a civilian contractor until he moved to the Computer Sciences Corporation. upon his retirement in 2000 Joe settled on the Eastern shore of Maryland. Also, a member of the Asbury Methodist Church and Nabb Center, Joe was the treasurer for the Allen Historical Society and assisted the Redden Ferry Community.
The Waller Family Collection includes a history of the Waller family from 1606-2008. It includes correspondence, newspapers, notebooks, census data, and photographic prints. Of particular note are the correspondence and images from Nannie Cantwell Waller, Gertrude Short Waller, and Marguerite Short Waller. Series I contains information on the direct Waller family line and reflects the binder level organization of the original collector. Series II contains information of the extended branches of the Waller family. Series III contains reproduced records, topical publications, and organizational information. Series IV Contains Research Notes and Resources.
This collection is arranged alphabetically in series following the original order on a folder level. Series one contains Waller Family Genealogy. Series two contains Waller Extended Family Genealogy. Series three contains Official Documents, Publications, and Organizational information. Series four contains Research Notes and Resources.
