Abstract

This collection contains plans, sketches, diagrams, proposals, and artist details from the creation of the Salisbury State University Heritage mural spanning the years 1999 to 2002.

Administrative History

Created for the development of the new Henson Science building in 2000 (as well as the university’s 75th anniversary the same year), the Heritage mural was a 494x8 feet construction fence that surrounded the site. The fence was erected in late 2000 following the groundbreaking for construction. The mural enlisted the help of various Salisbury University and UMES (University of Maryland Eastern Shore) art department faculty and was proposed by SU graduate student Pamela Collins, who coordinated much of the event. Not only utilizing the help of local artists, the mural was also completed by town members in a paint-by-number fashion. The mural detailed the various moments that occurred on campus since its inception, noting school clubs, sports, and political events that happened in every decade since 1925 until 2002. The final mural segment predicted the future of the campus in 2004, expressing the potential of the new Henson building’s research capabilities. 

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains plans, sketches, diagrams, proposals, and artist details from the creation of the Salisbury State University Heritage mural spanning the years 1999 to 2002. The proposal details the research of the university’s history as well as the logistical work needed to create the mural. Artist biographies and resumes included local professional artists, educators, curators, and former students. Reference photos contain images of other murals from around the country, and scaling to prepare the materials that were used for the project. Reference photos also include images from the university’s Evergreen yearbooks as visual resources for each decade from 1925 to 2002. Newsletters from campus are used as reference materials as well for nationwide and regional historical context. Digital files contain the artwork and plans for the design and layout of the mural’s images.
