Abstract

Anthony 'Tony' Sarbanes was an American athlete, scholar, educator, and soldier born in Salisbury, MD in 1937 to Greek immigrant parents. Sarbanes played basketball for Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), and later embarked on a long career as a coach for various Salisbury schools in basketball, golf, and soccer. After serving as a teacher for several years, Sarbanes served as Vice Principal for several Salisbury schools, eventually becoming Principal for Wicomico High School and the first Principal of Parkside High School.

Biographical History

Anthony ‘Tony’ Sarbanes was an American athlete, scholar, educator, and soldier born in 1937 in Salisbury, Maryland to Spyros & Matina Sarbanes, both of whom were Greek immigrants. Sarbanes earned his BA. in history from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), where he played varsity basketball for all four years. His degree enabled him to become a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army, which allowed him to attend the Infantry School, Officer Basic Course, and Airborne School at Fort Benning, after which he became an officer in the 29th Infantry. After leaving active duty in 1961, he earned his Master of Education degree from Western Maryland College in 1968, eventually earning over 42 additional graduate credits from University of Maryland College Park, University of Tennessee, and Salisbury University.

 

Sarbanes began his career in public education in February 1961, teaching social studies and English at Wicomico Junior High School, Pittsville High School, and Wicomico Senior High School. While teaching at Wicomico High, he also served as varsity basketball coach and assistant varsity soccer coach, and later volunteered to fill the vacant coaching position for the school golf team. Beginning in 1965, he became the Vice Principal at Wicomico Junior High School until 1968, when he filled the same position at James M. Bennett High School until 1971. In 1971, he returned to Wicomico High School as Principal until 1974, when he became Principal of the brand-new Parkside High School until 1980.

 

Despite retiring from active service in 1961, Sarbanes remained in the Army Reserves, eventually reaching the rank of Major General in 1988. He retired from the Army after 33 years of service in 1991. Sarbanes was honored by Parkside in 2014, on the 40th anniversary of the school’s opening.

Scope and Content Note

The Tony Sarbanes Collection contains newspaper clippings pertaining to his time as an educator at Parkside High School, materials relating to his military service, and scrapbooks assembled by Sarbanes concerning his family life and coaching career on the Eastern Shore. Also included is an advertisement from his family's restaurant, the Salisbury Candy Kitchen.
