Joe Long was an American athlete, soldier, railroad worker, and politician born in 1921 in Delmar, Maryland. The Joe Long collection contains material compiled by Joe Long and his wife Mabel, who acted his campaign manager during campaigns. Materials included are newspapers, government bills, speeches, cards, letters, books, scrapbooks, and photographs compiled and saved by the Longs since the late 1930's.
Joseph ‘Joe’ Long was a Salisbury City councilman, Democratic Delegate, Senator, soldier, railroad worker, and baseball player born in Delmar, Maryland in 1921. After attending Wicomico High School and being a star player on the school’s football and baseball teams, and played on the local baseball circuit as an amateur player for Princess Anne’s local team. During World War II, Long joined the Army Air Corps, where he worked in aircraft maintenance. After the war, Long returned to the Eastern Shore and began working on railroads before eventually running for a position on the Salisbury City Council, which eventually led to him being elected to the House of Delegates and then the Maryland Senate. Long retired from politics in 1986, and died in 2008.
The Joesph Long Papers are an archival collection compiled by Joseph and Mabel Long during Joe Long's baseball, military, and political careers as well as his personal life. The bulk of the collection is taken up by newspapers documenting political activities and local news, as well scrapbooks and various plaques and certificates from Maryland social, fraternal, and political groups. Much of the political content of the collection involves labor relations and public perceptions of local and state officials, as well as Long's fight for Salisbury-area cable TV in the 1950s, utility pricing legislation, and calls for increased rights and living standards in the mobile home industry. The collection contains six main series. The first series contains materials related to the personal life of Joe Long, such as cards, documents, booklets/pamphlets, and possessions. The second series concerns Joe Long's political life, and contains booklets and pamphlets, government books, and documents. The third series contains materials belonging to Long's various election campaigns, such as bumper stickers, cards, official notices, letters, posters, and newspaper ads. The fourth series contains newspapers, ranging from the 1930s to the mid-2000s. Newspaper materials include letters to the editor, news concerning Joe Long's political life, whole newspapers and sections, local news, and various local and national newspaper columns. The fifth series contains photographs and scrapbooks, with scrapbooks being located in oversize boxes. The final series contains the numerous plaques and certificates that Long compiled over his career.
The Joe Long Collection is divided into 6 main series and multiple subseries. They are
