Scope and Content Note
The Milford W. Twilley Papers is arranged into six series and ranges from 1922 to 1993.
The first series is titled Twilley's Personal History and ranges from 1944 to 1990. This series contains church pamphlets from the Asbury United Methodist Church, a brief history of Milford Twilley's personal life as well as his business, as well as a signed picture of George W. and Barabara Bush, an invitation to the Republican Senatorial Inner Circle, and a marriage anniversary congratulations from the Reagan Administration in 1988.
The second series is titled Newspaper Clippings and ranges from 1963 to 1993. This series contains a large number of newspaper articles and pictures with a large number of topics. There is an article celebrating the first shopping mall in Salisbury in 1967, Salisbury's first bypass, an article celebrating when Salisbury University changed names, and an article announcing that the Salisbury State University Research Center was gifted a collection. The large majority of the newspapers document housing projects within Salisbury. There are articles about a new elderly housing project, new apartments, a $2 million housing project, and low rent apartment projects. There are also a number of articles discussing how September 19th named Milford Twilley day. There are also the obituaries of Milford Twilley and Vaughn E. Richardson, who appeared to have been friends with Twilley for over 30 years.
The third series is titled Correspondence and ranges from 1964 to 1993. This series contains both personal and business correspondences. There are letters, both personal and for business, newsletters, postcards, and other holiday and congratulatory cards. In the personal correspondences file, there are several cards congratulating Twilley on construction projects, and September 19th being named Milford Twilley Day.
The fourth series is titled Twilley's Business Materials and ranges from 1965 to 1992. This series contains blank letterheads, checks, financial statements, Pemberton Hall Foundations newsletters, and housing reports. This series also contains a few housing sketches, an Ocean Colony pamphlet, and a World of the Carousel Condominium Pamphlet.
The fifth series is titled Advertisements and ranges from 1952 to 1991. This series contains mainly newspaper advertisements, but there are a couple of flyers as well. There are advertisements for housing complexes like Pocomoke Heights, Ocean Colony, Westlake, Glenwood Park, Crestwood, Glendale, Brookridge, and Plainfield. There are also advertisements about the Twilley Center, Twilley's Ready Mix Concrete from 1947, and several development ads titled "Home of Tomorrow" from Milford W. Twilley Builders.
Finally, the sixth series is titled Photographs and ranges from 1922 to 1991. This series contains a number of personal photographs of Twilley, his wife, and their friends. For example, there are several copies of a professional picture Twilley and his wife had taken from 1991. There are also photographs from a party they hosted at their Ocean City home in 1966. There photographs from 1965 of Ocean Colony and two photos of the Twilley home in 1964.
