Abstract

The George White Collection consists of a series of ephemera, files, and documents from Salisbury, Maryland businesses and people collected pertaining to Salisbury, Maryland during White’s former position as president of the Wicomico Historical Society.

Biographical History

George White, an attorney, was the former president of the Wicomico Historical Society. 

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains material relating to Salisbury, Maryland businesses, greater land development, and people. Series I documents Wade T. Porter's personal correspondence during the Spanish-American War. Series II contains the widest scope of material about Salisbury, Maryland from 1730 to 2007.  

Series I: Letters from Wade T. Porter to Edna W. Gillis, 1898-1899 contains personal correspondence and letters from Wade Porter to Edna W. Gillis in 1898 relating information about his military training and service in the Spanish-American War. This includes a photograph and loose items relating to the letters.

Series II: Land and Living in Salisbury, Maryland, 1730-1970 contains books, maps, photographs, land deeds, programs and booklets about the land of Salisbury, Maryland, and the housing, schools, tourism, and transportation that relate to greater Salisbury development. This series contains five subseries: Delmarva and Salisbury surveys and development plans, Salisbury housing, Salisbury land, Delmarva and Salisbury tourism, and Maryland transportation. 

Series III: Cultural Activities in Salisbury, Maryland, 1831-2007 contains photographs, newspaper clippings, magazines, receipts, ledgers, and family records from past Salisbury businesses and various people from Salisbury, Maryland, some of which pertain to notable historical events. This series contains ten subseries: Assorted Salisbury, Maryland postcards, Salisbury [State] University events and education, Salisbury baseball, Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury sailing boats photographs, political artifacts from Salisbury, newspapers and assorted clippings and magazines, assorted receipts and statements from businesses, ephemera, and people of Salisbury. 

Arrangement Statement

The collection is arranged in three Series. Series 2 and 3 are arranged in five and ten Subseries respectively. Each is arranged by subject and chronologically. 

Folders are listed by their location in each box; any given subject may be dispersed throughout the entirety of the collection.
