Abstract

The Harold Boyer collection documents the political culture of youth from 1960 to 1970. Campaign materials in this collection were gathered by Harold Boyer most likely off the floor of the 1964 democratic convention that supported the election of Lyndon B. Johnson and Hubert Humphrey for President and Vice President, respectively. These items include paper pennants, a campaign sticker, two posters, a 1960 Victory Manual for College Chairmen, a Young Americans cartoon, an LBJ volunteer envelope, and two Young Citizens for Johnson Folders. In addition, there are several counter-culture publications that were collected by Harold Boyer. This collection includes: Bijou Funnies, Tasty by the Washington Free Community, Quicksilver Times, the Washington Free Press, and The Realist.

Biographical History

Harold Boyer was a lifelong Democrat and active supporter of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. He taught American history and political science at Hagerstown Community College from 1962 to 1994.

Scope and Content Note

The Harold Boyer collection documents the political culture of youth from 1960 to 1970.  Campaign materials in this collection were gathered by Harold Boyer most likely off the floor of the 1964 democratic convention that supported the election of Lyndon B. Johnson and Hubert Humphrey for President and Vice President, respectively. These items include paper pennants saying "Hello" and "Lyndon," a sticker reading "Tydings Democrat for U.S. Senate," two posters of "Johnson and Humphrey for the USA," a 1960 Victory Manual for College Chairmen, a Young Americans "Riding into Victory" cartoon, an LBJ volunteer envelope which includes: a "Congressional Record: Proceedings and Debates of the 88th Congress, Second Session," "Some Questions and Answers on the Civil Rights Bill," "Mr. President: The Office The Man" magazine by The President's Club, and "Barry Goldwater on the Issues," and two Young Citizens for Johnson Folders which include: a schedule of events, phone list of executive party members, members of Honorary Steering Committee, an history of the group, an "Explanation of the Work of the LBJ Volunteers During the 1964 National Democratic Convention," and a State Chairman and College Coordinator by state list.
