Scope and Content Note
The Eastern Shore Commerce Ephemera collection is divided into five series and includes correspondences, accounting records, public speeches and flyers, court documents, and ledgers. This collection also has many documents that focus on the Howard Family, the Goslee Family, and the Morris Family. Their papers are not divided by family but are included through the 5 series. Their papers are mainly focused in the first, second, and fourth series. In addition, in the fifth series, there is a minute book from the Betsy Ross Council of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Series 1 is Correspondances and includes letters, notes, a doctors note excusing someone from the Morris Family from working, and even a brief biography about Captain WIlliam the Kid written by someone in the Morris Family. This series ranges from 1875 to 1911.
Series 2 is Receipts and Records of payments and ranges from 1724 to 1954. This series includes the receipts from the Morris, Howard, and Goslee family. It also includes an insurance document, receipts from a hotel, and several blank letterheads from the 1910s and 1920s.
Series 3 is Public Addresses and Flyers and ranges from 1836 to 1957. The third series contains lectures, reports, flyers, speeches, and even a radio address. There are temperance speeches from R. E. Elegood from 1833 and a lecture from Dr. J.T. Herson from 1919 discussing his trips abroad. There is also a campaign flyer from 1836 for Martin Van Buren that discusses his position on debtors prison.
Series 4 contains Court Documents from 1883 to 1910 and includes court settlements from the Howard and Goslee families and a mortgage settlement from the Betsy Ross Council.
Finally, Series 5 is Ledgers and diaries that range from 1887 to 1927. There is a daily diary documenting an unnamed person's daily activites, a meeting minutes book from the Betsy Ross Council of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a Post Office Registry.
