This collection consists of correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, and journals of the Dixon, White and Pieper Families of Pocomoke City, Maryland. Beginning in the mid-19th century, extensive personal correspondence between family members chronicles a broad family history over 100 years. Family bibles and photographs capture births, marriages and deaths of the Dixon and White families of Pocomoke City as well as life on the Eastern Shore in the late 19th and early 20th century.
R.T. Dixon rented the flour and grist mill in from H.H. Dashiell in Pocomoke city in the late 19th century. R.T. Dixon and his wife Eliza Faulkner Dixon had 13 children between 1847 and 1869. One of their daughters, Maggie Dixon married Oscar White, their children were Anne and Evelyn White. Evelyn White went on to marry Grover Pieper and their daughter is Mary Anne Pieper. The family resided in Pocomoke City throughout most of the 20th century.
The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence directly linked to the Dixon Family and the White Family of Pocomoke City in the mid to late 19th century; it follows the Dixons, Whites, and eventually, the Pieper Family of Pocomoke City through the first half of the 20th century. The personal letters detail daily life in Pocomoke City, local news and gossip, working conditions, as well as church and school events. The correspondence begins with letters to R.T. Dixon and his wife Eliza Dixon, and continues with two of their children, Maggie Dixon and James C. Dixon. R.T. Dixon’s papers contain many receipts and ledgers related to the running of the Pocomoke Mill. Eliza’s letters are from her children and grandchildren. James Dixon’s letters document his difficulty in finding work, the death of his wife, and the care of his children. It also includes responses to James Dixon's personal ad in a singles newspaper, including letters and photographs sent to James from the women responding. Maggie Dixon’s letters detail family events and daily life of the Dixon family, her marriage to Oscar White and her children Anne and Evelyn White. Oscar White’s correspondence is largely made up of letters from his wife and daughters while he worked away in a shipyard in Baltimore. The largest part of the collected correspondence is that of Anne and Evelyn White. Anne White was the organist at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Pocomoke City for most of her life. The collection contains her recollections, her research into the history of St. Mary’s Parish, and an extensive collection of sheet music for the piano and the organ, ephemera specific to St. Mary’s Church, as well as general ephemera from church life in the early to mid 20th century. Notably, there are courtship letters between Anne and a Baltimore man, Bill Morschel, that span 3 years. Evelyn (White) Pieper’s letters capture the experience of growing up in the early 1900s, of her work and her family. In addition to letters there is a substantial Christmas Card collection spanning nearly a century.
The collection also contains bills, receipts, cookbooks, and advertising, as well as banking ephemera and hotel stationary, representing broad coverage of the businesses in Pocomoke City and the surrounding area through the late 19th and early 20th century. There are photographs, albums, and photos included in some correspondence. Many photos are identified. In its size and breadth this collection captures life on the Eastern Shore in fine detail.
Other individuals and families associated with the collection are Jeannette White, Warren Dodge, Delia Dixon, Mollie Ball née Dixon, Elizabeth Miller, Irene Dixon, Mattie White née Townsend, Cullen Family and Funk Family.
