Abstract

The E. Elwood Lynch Collection details the personal and professional life of E. Elwood Lynch, and his involvement in mosquito control efforts in Delaware, Florida, and Maryland. Personal items from the collection include correspondence and printed materials. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs, films, and slides taken by E. Elwood Lynch in both a personal and professional capacity during his mosquito control work.

Biographical History

E. Elwood Lynch was born in 1908 in Selbyville, Delaware to a farm family. After graduating in 1927, Lynch would attend Cornell University’s College of Engineering for several years. During the Great Depression, Lynch joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, becoming involved in early mosquito control efforts. Mr. Lynch worked for the State of Delaware for several years in the State Highway Department, which oversaw mosquito control efforts before doing similar work in Dade County, Florida beginning in 1951. In 1956, Lynch joined the State of Maryland’s mosquito control efforts as an engineer and project manager, developing several vehicles that were able to traverse the wetlands, and working with officials within the University of Maryland System until his retirement in 1976. Lynch was a member of the United Methodist Church, and an active member of the Lower Delaware Shrine Club. A 32nd Degree Mason, Lynch was also a member of the Jefferson Lodge 15 AF & AM. After 28 years of retirement, Mr. Lynch passed away in 2002.

Scope and Content Note

This collection documents teh life of E. Elwood Lynch, who was involved in early mosquito control efforts in Delaware, Florida, and Maryland. A talented project engineer, the bulk of the collection is made up of photographs and slides detailing his professional life. For the sake of categorization, the collection is divided into three large categories - Series 1: Personal, Series 2: Professional, and Series 3: Photographic Material. One oversized photograph has been placed in an oversize folder.
