Abstract

The Kent County Alms House records offer insight into the care of the economically disadvantaged in Kent County, Maryland. The collection consists of a CD-ROM of scanned images of two ledgers from the Alms House Records from the William A. Bayard Sutton Collection of the Kent County Historical Society from 1896-1940. The first ledger contains meeting minutes and financial records of the trustees of the alms house from 1906-1932. The second ledger contains records of the occupants of the alms house. The records list each resident's name, race, nationality, age, trade, birthplace, and date of discharge or death from 1896-1940. It also contains a photograph of the alms house.

Administrative History

Before the establishment of statewide social services in Maryland, the care of economically disadvantaged people varied from county to county. Alms houses were established in some counties to provide charitable housing. They were operated by charities or the trustees of a bequest.
