Abstract

The records of the Order of the Eastern Star, Manokin Chapter located in Princess Anne, Maryland, documents the organizations activities through ephemera including a brochure about the organization and meeting booklet from 2004.

Administrative History

The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world for men and women. Started in the mid-1800s, today there are over two million members worldwide, and approximately 18,500 members in the state of Maryland. Dr. Rob Morris, Poet Laureate of Masonry, was the founder of the organization. He felt that the female relatives of Master masons should also share in a small way, the benefits of this great fraternal Order. It was through his dedication that the ritual, with its fundamental principles was published in 1850. The 100th anniversary of the writing of the Order of the Eastern Star ritual was observed in Washington, D.C.
