Abstract

This collection of digitized scrapbook pages depicts the baseball career of Sharptown, Maryland native, Mr. Richard Griffith. The collection includes digitized newspaper clippings and photos from Mr. Griffith's baseball career from spanning from 1953-1961. Also included is a digitized copy of Mr. Griffith's application to be inducted into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001 as well as a the copy of the program from the induction event. Biographical History

Richard Howard Griffith, was born November 30, 1938 in Trenton, New Jersey.  Griffith lived most of his life in Sharptown, Maryland.  He graduated from Mardela High School with the class of 1956.  He was an accomplished pitcher for the Mardella baseball team.  He went on to pitch baseball for the Sharptown American Legion squad and then out of high school, in 1956 Griffith was recruited by the Washington Senators to play for their AAA team.  In 1961 he was drafted into the U.S.  Army, where he continued to play ball for several years.  After leaving the army Griffith coached slow pitch and men's modified softball.  In 2001 he was inducted into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame.  

Richard Griffith worked for Dupont in Seaford for 38 years and then 10 years for Kitty's Flowers. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Sharptown, MD.  He was married to Edna Baker Griffith for almost 52 years and they had two children together, Teresa Herring of Sharptown, MD and Greg Griffith of Morganton, NC.  

Mr. Griffith was a member of the Sharptown American Legion, Post 218, Seaford Elks, and served on the Sharptown Volunteer Fire Department for 51 years.  

Richard Griffith died at the age of 79 on April 21, 2018.  

Scope and Content Note

The newspaper clippings, photos and event programs digitized in the collection are from a scrapbook created by Richard Griffith.  The digitized scrapbook pages mainly contain newspaper clippings highlighting and recording Richard Griffith's successful baseball career.  The newspapers span his high school baseball career ending in 1956 and continue on through his American Legion and professional baseball career until he was drafted into the army in 1961.  The digitized pages and newspaper clippings also highlight his Army baseball career.  Included in the collection are loose newspaper clippings, team photos, and a program that was from Richard Griffith's induction into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.

Arrangement Statement

The scrapbook was digitized by page order.  Any loose items placed inside the book were digitized next and then loose items placed in back of scrapbook were digitized.
