The Atwood Barwick Collection consists of historical and travel materials accumulated by Atwood Barwick, a transcript of judicial records by Atwood Barwick, and a notebook by Arthur O’Donnell, dating from 1897-2010. It contains brochures, booklets, postcards and ephemera from historic sites in the United States, and booklets, catalogs, extracts, magazines offering insight into historical tourism in the United States from 1924-1984. The collection also contains magazines, newspapers, a transcript of colonial judicial records of Somerset County, Maryland, and a notebook on the First World War by a student at New York University in 1918 offering insight into nautical and United States’ history from 1696-1995.
Atwood Sinclair Barwick was born in Silver Spring, Maryland on April 12, 1934 to Arthur and Leah Catlin Barwick. Educated at Montgomery Blair High School, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in geology from George Washington University in 1960. He served in the Coast Guard reserves and worked as an oceanographer in the Navy Department for 20 years. After a further three years of service in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, he retired in 1980. Barwick resided in Connecticut and in Somerset County, Maryland, and visited historic sites throughout the United States. Between 1998 and 2010, he transcribed the judicial records of the court of Somerset County, Maryland from 1670 to 1698 for the Maryland State Archives. Barwick died in Chestertown, Maryland on February 18, 2012.

The collection documents the historical interests and travels of Atwood Barwick.
Series I. Travel contains brochures, booklets, postcards and ephemera from historic sites in the United States from 1924-1984. The Series includes brochures and booklets from the Smithsonian Institution, Colonial Williamsburg and Historic Annapolis.
Series II. Transcript contains a transcript of judicial records of the court of Somerset County, Maryland from 1696-1698, completed by Atwood Barwick in 2010.
Series III. Notebook contains a notebook on the First World War by Arthur O’Donnell, a student at New York University in 1918. The notebook includes notes, maps and newspaper clippings on the final German offensives of the war.
Series IV. Publications contains booklets, catalogs, extracts, magazines and newspapers from 1897-1995. The Series includes magazines and newsletters from Mystic Seaport and the Naval Historical Foundation.
The collection is arranged in four Series. Series I is arranged alphabetically by state. Series III and IV are arranged by subject. Series IV contains Subseries A-C.
