The Edgar Bennett Collection documents the personal and professional lives of Edgar T. Bennett and his wife, Margaret Truitt Bennett. Personal items from the collection include land grants, photographs, and correspondence. The bulk of the collection revolves around Edgar Bennett's professional life, mainly consisting of records from the former Red Star Motor Coaches, Inc. bus company, and Bennett's political career in the Republican Party, Maryland State Senate and Maryland State Roads Commission.
Edgar Bennett (1905 - 1982) was born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1905 to Ernest B. and Alice Mae Phillips Bennett. Over the course of his professional life, Bennett was a realtor, land developer, Vice President and General Manager for the Red Star Motor Coaches Inc. bus company, and served as a director of the Farmer’s Bank of Mardela, a director of the Lower Shore Heart Association, and was a member of the Kidney Foundation. Furthermore, Edgar Bennett had a public service career stetching from 1952 to 1959; serving as a member of the Maryland State Senate from 1952 to 1953. In 1953, he was appointed as State Roads Commissioner by then-Governor Theodore R. McKeldin. Bennett would remain State Roads Commissioner until 1959.
In his personal life, Edgar Bennett was a member of the Mardela Springs Emmanuel United Methodist Church; serving as co-chairman of the administrative board, chairman of the finance committee, and served as a Sunday school teacher.
Bennett was also a member of several local organizations. A 33rd degree Mason, Bennett was a former Master of Mardela’s Temple Lodge (AF and AM), former Master of the Salisbury Lodge of Perfection, former Master of the Salisbury Chapter Rose Croix, a member of the Chesapeake Consistory of Scottish Rites in Baltimore, and a member of the Boumi Shrine Temple. Additionally, he served as the first President of the Eastern Shore Shrine Club, a former President and Treasurer of the Eastern Shore Scottish Rite Club, and was a former member and Director of the Salisbury Lion’s Club.
This collection documents the life of Edgar T. Bennett, a prominent businessman and state politician from Mardela Springs, MD. Bennett was the Vice President and General Manager of Red Star Motor Coaches Inc., a Salisbury based bus company; as well as a prominent Republican politician, and the bulk of the collection is made up of professional materials concerning his political career and Red Star Motor Coaches Inc. During his political career, Edgar Bennett served on the State Roads Commission during the construction of the Patapsco River Tunnel, Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and US Route 50.
For the sake of categorization, this collection is divided into two large categories - Series I: Personal, and Series II: Professional. Each series is divided into several subseries, covering categories such as correspondence, creative works, maps, meeting minutes, financial documents, photo albums, scrapbooks, reports, and printed materials such as workbooks and magazines. Alongside the previously mentioned materials are numerous artifacts belonging to the Bennett family, such as clothing patterns, gift boxes, fans, notebooks, eyeglasses, and ashtrays. Some materials have been placed into oversize boxes and drawers, mainly specific maps and documents from Edgar Bennett's time in the Maryland State Roads Commission.
This collection is arranged into two series:
- Series I: Personal
- Series II: Professional
Each series has several subseries that are organized alphabetically. In Series I, there are: Artifacts, Correspondence, Financial Records, Creative Works, Legal Documents, Maps, Photographs, Scrapbooks, and Printed Materials. Series II contains Correspondence, Financial Statements, Meeting Minutes, Photographic Materials, Political Information, Financial Records, Public Service Information, Printed Materials, and Reports.
In short, Series I contains all personal correspondence, personal photographs, etc. that were accumulated by the Bennett family, including Margaret Bennett’s educational documents. Series II contains all available material from Edgar Bennett’s business and political career; including party correspondence and government reports.
