Administrative History The Daily Times, first published in 1886, was originally owned by the Truitt family of Salisbury, Maryland and was originally published as The Wicomico News. The publication changed its name in 1923 to The Evening Times and later to The Salisbury Times and The Shoreman’s Daily. In 1967, the publication changed its Sunday name to The Sunday Times while using The Daily Times for its other weekly publications. The Sunday Times name would later be dropped and currently publishes under The Daily Times name every day of the week. The Daily Times is also responsible for the publication of other publications in the Delmarva Media Group. These publications include: Delaware Beachcomber, Delmarva Coastal Press, Ocean Pines Independent, Somerset Herald, Wicomico News, Worcester Times, the Wave. These publications are distributed throughout various local towns on the Eastern Shore. The Delaware Beachcomber and the Wave are publications for the Delaware beaches, while the other publications are out of Salisbury or their namesake locations.
The Marylander and Herald began publication in 1898 and ceased December 26, 1984. It was published weekly. Title history based on April 4, 1899. It was published as the Marylander & Herald October 7, 1982-1984. The newspaper was formed by the union of the Marylander and the Somerset Herald and was continued by the Somerset Herald. According to Newspapers and Newspapermen of Maryland, Fontaine and Dashiell were the owners of the paper. Few issues survive prior to December 13, 1913 when a fire destroyed the Marylander and Herald office, then occupied by W. H. Dashiell and owned by C. W. Fontaine. William Dashiell appears as owner and editor in 1912 and remained until September 12, 1916, when Theodore A. Walker became editor and business manager. Walker stayed with the paper until at least 1921. The Somerset Publishing Company, incorporated April 23, 1923, must have bought the paper from Dashiell. James E. Byrd, Sr., one of the officers of the Somerset Publishing Company, appears as editor in 1924. He sold his interest in the paper to his sons, James E. Byrd, Jr. and Clarence L. Byrd. The two brothers published the paper until 1973 when Clarence L. Byrd sold his interest to J. Bryan Byrd, son of James E. Byrd, Jr. The Marylander and Herald was purchased by Atlantic Publications, Inc. of Accomack, Virginia in December 1983. From 1941 to 1947, the newspaper was published as the Salisbury Advertiser, but again published as the Salisbury Advertiser and the Wicomico Countian from 1947 to 1974. After 1974, the newspaper ran as The New Salisbury Advertiser.
