The Tull and White Families papers include an extensive volume of personal and professional materials including photographs and graphic advertisements from the 1820s to the 1980s. Of particular interest are large amounts of correspondence, popular advertisements, and photographs. The correspondence documents contemporary social and political thought on the Eastern Shore from a variety of perspectives. The collection also includes some materials which do not pertain directly to the family and include genealogical information, photographs, receipts, and correspondence.
Edward Southey White (1838-1899), was a respected judge and businessman who owned a dry goods store in Colbourns District, Worcester County, Maryland. He was married to Mary Carveller Burbage (1843-1917) and had three children, Mary Florence White (1864-1962), John E. (b. 1866), Lyda B. (1901-1945), Cornelius (b. 1871), Southey King White (1874-1959), and James Roscoe White (1874-1959).
Southey King White was born in Whiton, Maryland in 1874. He attended Western Maryland College and the United States Military Academy at West Point. Southey married Iris Tull (1883-1962) in 1902 and had six children. Best known as “Judge White” he was involved in local politics and education throughout his career. He played an active role in changing the educational system of the area, and is credited with pushing for different teachers for each subject instead of a single teacher for all subjects at the high school level. He was the first man appointed judge to the newly organized Peoples Court in 1928. Lastly, he was known for his amazing knowledge of community life and it was known that younger newspapermen would come to him for details on happenings many years ago.
Iris Tull White was born in Tull’s Corner, Somerset County to William and Stella Tull. She graduated from Western Maryland College, and completed graduate work at Johns Hopkins University to prepare for her work as a librarian. Before her marriage, she served as the principal of Quindocqua Elementary School. She married Southey King White in 1903, they had six children. In 1923, White became the librarian of what was then known as the Wicomico County Subscription Library (Wicomico Public Libraries), and planned for a free library, rather than a paid service. She was given the Salisbury Award in 1948 for her work with the public library. She served as librarian in the county for 25 years. She was a member of both Wicomico County Democratic Women’s Club and the Wicomico Historical Society, as well as numerous other organizations. She wrote many regional histories in Salisbury, Maryland.
Mary Katherine “Polly” White Burnett, (1911-1987), was born to Southey and Iris White, in Salisbury, Wicomico County, Maryland. She was educated in the Wicomico County Public Schools and the Salisbury Normal School, where she was employed as a teacher after graduation. She also co-owned Burnett-White Tire with her husband, George E. Burnett, with whom she two children, K. King Burnett and George E. Burnett, Jr. She was an involved community member who was pivotal to organizing the Wicomico County Centennial for the city of Salisbury in 1967. She wrote and organized many facets of the celebration. In addition to her efforts for the Centennial, Polly was instrumental in the stabilization and restoration of Pemberton Hall, creating the Pemberton Hall Foundation and raising the funds to stabilize the historic structure.
This collection includes personal correspondence and notes from a variety of White and Tull family members including Southey K. White, Iris Tull White, Polly White Burnett and Edward White of Salisbury, Maryland and Wilmington, Delaware spanning from the early 19th century to the late 20th century.
