Abstract

The Richard and Jane Yantis collection consists of the genealogical research notes of Richard and Jane Yantis from 1994-2011. The collection offers insight into the genealogies of several dozen families, including the Brittingham and Fooks families of Maryland. It includes copies of tithtables for Northampton County, Virginia from 1662-1677, and a Bible from the Hurst family of Dorchester County, Maryland. The Bible contains genealogical information on the Hurst family from 1821-1910.

Biographical History

Richard Perry Yantis was born on July 1, 1932 in Columbus, Ohio. Educated at Westerville High School, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1954. Commissioned into the Air Force, he flew Bob Hope on his 1958 USO Christmas Tour and flew combat reconnaissance during the Vietnam War. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1974. Yantis earned Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina in 1962 and a PhD from Ohio State University in 1966. He taught mathematics at the Air Force Academy and retired as a Professor of Mathematics at Otterbein College in 1996. Yantis died on February 17, 2018.

Jane McAllister Yantis was born on March 28, 1931 in Eldorado, Maryland. Educated at Hurlock High School, she graduated from the University of Maryland in 1952. She taught high school in Maryland and Wyoming before working as a market researcher from Procter & Gamble. Yantis died on February 11, 2018.

The couple married on October 10, 1959, and had two sons. The two conducted research for 40 years, compiling genealogical information on over 100,000 families.

Scope and Content Note

The collection documents the genealogical research of Richard and Jane Yantis from 1994-2011. The notes contain genealogical information on families beginning with the letters A through H, including the Brittingham and Fooks families of Maryland. The highlight of the collection is the Hurst family Bible, was published in 1872. It has a gilded leather cover, over 700 color prints and black and white etchings, and contains genealogical records from the Hurst family from 1821-1910.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by family, maintain the original order created by Richard and Jane Yantis. Folders are listed by their location in the box; any given subject may be dispersed throughout the entirety of the collection.
