Abstract

The Wicomico County Airport Commission records consist of a complete run of meeting minutes from 1949-1993. The minutes offer details of the airport operations, expansions, and improvements to the Salisbury-Ocean City-Wicomico Regional Airport located in Salisbury, Maryland.

Administrative History

The Wicomico County Airport Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Airport Manager of the Salisbury Regional Airport and the Wicomico County Executive. The Works Progress Administration began construction of the airport in Salisbury, Maryland in 1940. It was completed in 1944 at a cost of $1.5 million and leased to the U.S. Navy. Commercial passenger and freight service began in 1946. The airport has grown to over 1,000 acres, making it the second largest airport in Maryland. The 26,000 square foot Richard A. Henson terminal was opened in 1990, and the airport offers daily roundtrip flights to Charlotte, North Carolina and other cities in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
