Abstract

This collection contains a photograph of Sarah Handy Mallon at a Preservation Trust of Wicomico County Meeting.

Biographical History

A descendent of early American settlers (1600's), she was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1916, the daughter of H. Jamison (Jam) Handy and Ethel Tremaine Handy. She was graduated from Principa College in Elsah, IL in 1938 and attended Michigan State University to attain her teaching certification and further her graduate studies. A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Rochester Junior Women's Club and the Crittenton Hospital Auxiliary. She also volunteered for the Rochester Hills Public Library and was a tutor with the Oakland Literacy Council in her late 80's. She was a generous supporter and benefactor of the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan, and was instrumental in arranging for the permanent preservation of the Handy family history by the Clements Library. With the library's assistance, she edited a family genealogy written by her great-grandfather, which the library published in 1992, a work of many years and of great pride to her. Wife of the late Dr. Max K. Mallon. Mother of Susan M. Webb, Jervis H. (Diana) Webb, Virginia C. (Michael Loux) Webb, James H. (Connie) Mallon and S. Emily (Jeff) Ferry. Also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
