Abstract

Color print calendar, sponsored by G.C. Rayne and Company, Ford Motor Sales, Pittsville, Maryland, 1931. The calendar features a hand-tinted photographic print of Martha Ann Rayne, daughter of Gorman and Mattie Rayne.

Biographical History

Gorman Cleveland Rayne, (1886-1955), born to Joseph and Mamie Rayne, in Pittsville, Maryland, began working at the young age of 15performing piecework. By 1918, he was employed as a machinist for L.C. Freeny. He married Mattie Parker (1892-1929), and had one child, a daughter, Martha Ann (1929-2017). Gorman owned and operated G.C. Rayne and Company, a Ford Motor Company dealership and garage in Pittsville, Maryland. 

Martha Ann Rayne, was raised in Pittsville, Md. by a very special aunt and uncle, the late May and William Downes. She graduated from Wicomico High School with the class of 1946. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland and later earned her Master's Degree in Education from Salisbury State University. She taught fifth grade at Pittsville Elementary school. Her last years there, she served as Vice Principal.
After her retirement, she became an Inn Keeper with one of her dearest friends and fellow retired school teacher, Louiselee Roche at the former Glasgow Bed and Breakfast Inn in Cambridge, Md.
