Abstract

The Arthur Smack Family Bible contains handwritten marriage, birth and death records of the Smack Family from Newark, Worcester County, Maryland. Family records were most likely written by Arthur Smack and his descendants, and includes family names from as early as the 1840s. The Bible, published in 1908 by A.J. Holman and Company, includes a comprehensive and illustrated history of the books of the Old and New Testaments, as well as additional narratives written by the Rev. Arthur Nevin D.D.

Biographical History

Arthur Prettyman Smack (1874-1951), born in Newark, Worcester County, Maryland to Joel and Elizabeth (Dennis) Smack, was employed as a Pennsylvania Railroad agent. Arthur married the former Luetta Converse of Painted Rock, Pennsylvania on October 23, 1901. Their union produced a daughter, Kathryn Smack Van Dyke (1904-1970).
