Abstract

The papers of Lyle Leland Gordy comprehensively document his education for medical practice at the University Hospital, Baltimore and membership in the Randolph Winslow Surgical Society through a series of certificates and photographs. Additionally, a diploma for his son, Lee Acworth Gordy from the Baltimore City College, demonstrates an emphasis on post-secondary education, 1915-1927.

Biographical History

Lyle Leland Gordy, (1886-1965), was born in Quantico, Wicomico County, Maryland, to Alison W. Gordy, a farmer, and his wife, Lena a seamstress. 

Gordy married Ruth Acworth (1887-1956), and they had two children, Lee Acworth Gordy, (1910-1990) and Lyle Leland Gordy, Jr., (1913-1982). (The couple divorced sometime between 1930 and 1940.)

The Gordy's moved to Easton sometime before 1910, and Lyle was employed as an insurance agent. By 1915, Lyle was graduating from the University of Maryland, Baltimore and was a member of the Randolph Winslow Surgical Society. After graduation, he went into private practice on Maryland's Eastern Shore in Sharptown and then Baltimore in the 1940s, living at 5106 Harford Road.
