Abstract

This collection contains a nine-page architectural drawing package of the historic house "Long Hill," located on Wetipquin Ferry Road in Wicomico County, Maryland. Drawn in 1981 by Robert Meden and Linda White of the Office of Archeology and Historic Preservation Heritage Conversation and Recreation Service.

Administrative History

Long Hill is architecturally significant because it is an essentially untouched Maryland dwelling, dating from the second half of the 18th century, with excellent original paneling and a simple elegance which is striking. Purchased by James Dashiell, Sr. from Samuel Jackson in 1671, the 310-acre tract called Long Hill. The 1783 tax assessment for Somerset County indicates that John Stewart owned a 150-acre tract called Long Hill, in Nanticoke Hundred. John Stewart was the probable builder of Long Hill around 1767. The 1798 tax record lists Alexander Stewart (son of John Stewart) as the owner / occupant of a one-story wooden dwelling house, 68 feet by 20 feet in good repair on Tipkin Creek in Nanticoke Hundred. Since 1884, Hambury family has been in almost continuous ownership of Long Hill.
