Abstract

The Agnes Tilghman Lürman Photograph collection documents the activities of Ms. Lürman, and includes her visits to the “Grosses” also known as the Grosscoat Farm in Talbot County, Maryland, a trip to Paris, France in 1915, Shellfield, Wye Plantation, Weems, Virginia and Wharton Manor. Photographs also document the military service of William H. Decoursey Tilghman and J. Daniel Tilghman. Also, there is a comprehensive documentation of the National Service School Women’s Section of the Navy League at Camp Chevy Chase, 1917-1918. Concurrently Pat Calloway, a photographer stationed with the American Expeditionary Forces in France, 1917-1918, documented the sites in Paris, as well as the French landscape and daily life of a soldier during World War I.

Administrative History

The photographic albums were in the possession of Dr. Robert “Bob” Berry (1942-2012) a history professor at Salisbury University. At the time of his death the photographic albums were donated to the Nabb Research Center, little is known about the creators of the album; nonetheless, research conducted by Dr. Berry, T. Aaron Horner and Dr. G. Ray Thompson gave way to few conclusions.

Charles H. Calloway, also known as Pat, of Sharptown, Maryland, joined the American Expeditionary Forces and was stationed in France until the end of the war in 1918. During his time in the service, he documented the experiences of a soldier that include the Parisian landscape, the American soldier’s daily life and the remnants of war.

 Agnes Tilghman Lürman (1888-1959), was born in Baltimore, Maryland; she was the daughter of Theodore J. and Fannie T. Lürman.
