Abstract

Cato Family papers document the family activities and lineage of the Cato and Wyche families of Greensville County, Virginia and Salisbury, Maryland spanning two centuries. Hand-drawn lineage charts as well as land deeds, account bills, correspondence, and photographs are included and document the extensive family ancestry.

Biographical History

The Cato family came to Salisbury, Maryland by way of Texas and Norfolk, Virginia. Joanna Hauk Cato (1916-2008) was born to Una Belle Isbill and Willie Carlisle Hauk. She married Mr. Elliot Temple Cato in Norfolk, Virginia in 1937 and had two daughters Joanna C. Abercrombie and Mary Ellen C. Stark Hanson. Mrs. Cato was interested in local history as well as family history documenting her own family lineage which includes the Cato, Hall and Wyche lines. Mrs. Cato was also an avid gardener who belonged to several clubs including the Town and Country Garden Club of Salisbury and the Federated Garden Club of Maryland.

Materials are arranged chronologically with the exception of the photographs and artifacts which are listed at the end of the inventory. Folders are listed by their location in each box; any given subject may be dispersed throughout the entirety of the collection.
