Abstract

Bound volume of the World War I era newspaper, Stars and Stripes. The paper, an American military paper printed in France from February 8, 1918 - June 13, 1919, and published by the American Expeditionary Forces. The paper reports on a variety of matters on the war and home front that would concern members of the United States Armed Forces.

Administrative History

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Stars and Stripes is an American military newspaper that focuses and reports on matters concerning the members of the United States Armed Forces. Presently, Stars and Stripes publishes four daily print editions for the military service members serving overseas; including European, Middle Eastern, Japanese and South Korean editions are available in the electornic format. 

The paper was created by four Illinois Regiments during the early stages of the Civil War in 1861; the men, upon finding an empty print office decided to print a newspaper about their activities. 

During World War I, reporters and illustrators were young soldiers; the paper was published by the American Expeditionary Forces from 1918-1919. The editor, Harold Ross, would return home to found "The New Yorker". At this time, Stars and Stripes was an eight-page weekly paper which had, at its peak, over 500,000 readers.
